This is an old thread but it is ironic that I now have the same issue. So I thought it would be worthwhile to post what I have found.
The issue
I want to scan multiple photos at a time and have them automatically separated and saved in individual image files.
Can my Windows printer do this?
You can tell if your printer supports splitting scans by running Windows Fax and Scan. You have the capability if the check the box for 'Preview or scan images as separate files' is selectable and the text is not greyed out.
My HP OfficeJet 7610 A3 printer/scanner does not support this although my old Canon printer did - I now wish I'd kept the Canon just for this purpose.
Free software solutions
Free HP software: only if you have HP Solution Center which is discontinued for HP printers since 2011. It is replaced by HP Photo Creations which does not have a scanning capability (as an aside, it will use JPG, PNG, TIFF and GIF files but it won't use BMP files).
GIMP with the Divide Scanned Images plug-in.

Use another scanning method or app: If you cannot scan to your Mac from your printer, try using an app, such as HP Smart or HP Easy Scan, or another method, such as Scan to Email or Scan to Network. Troubleshoot network and USB connection issues: Go to one of the following documents for additional scan connection troubleshooting.
